Get to Know: Latin teacher Erin Davis
When did you start teaching?
“I started teaching 14 years ago at a private school in New Orleans. I taught there one year and then I went to the University of Missouri and I taught there for two years while I was working on my masters then I came to Norman High in 2007. This is my eleventh year here.”
Were you surprised to be picked teacher of the year?
“I was very surprised! I was one of the five finalists and I was so honored and overwhelmed. I really respect all of the other teachers and to just have that recognition among the faculty is amazing. When I learned that I was named Norman High teacher of the year, I felt blessed.”
How did you get into yoga and why do you like it?
“Yoga is probably my biggest hobby, it’s what I’m incredibly passionate about. (See what Dr. Beck’s hobbies are here). I first started taking yoga in 2008. I just wanted a new way to be active and my gym happened to offer yoga classes. I was so nervous when I went to my first class that my stomach hurt and I didn’t even know if I was going to be able to stay. After the first class, I was hooked. I absolutely loved it. It felt like there was this part of me that has been missing, that I didn’t know was missing, that I discovered in yoga. I love yoga because of the health benefits but really it’s the positive attitude that I developed about myself.”
What would you have been if not a teacher?
“That’s a tough question. I probably would’ve gone into some sort of health field. Probably something to do with natural medicine or chiropractic. I was actually very serious about going to a chiropractic school and becoming a chiropractor but things changed and I just didn’t do it.”
Which grade is your favorite to teach and why?
“That’s tough. I love teaching Latin one because I like seeing the look on students faces as they discover the intricacy of the language. I enjoy Latin two because you have students who are really excited to be there and things are more challenging. There are more struggles but the kids are motivated to learn. I can’t really pick a favorite overall.”
“I really like the movie Casablanca, but even though it’s not a movie I’d say Game of Thrones is by far my favorite series.”
“I really like old classic country but my current favorite is All or Nothing by Lost Frequencies.”
“Pride and Prejudice is my favorite book. I have lots of favorite books but that’s probably my most favorite, I usually read it about once a year.”
Do you like ugly Christmas sweaters?
“I like seeing them on other people. I will wear them if I don’t have to buy it but it’s hard for me to justify by buying an ugly sweater. I have one ugly christmas sweater and it has the twelve days of Christmas on it. I usually wear it once a year.”
What are your hobbies outside of teaching and yoga?
“I love spending time with my family. We recently moved to a farm so it’s been fun getting everything together. I knit and crochet a lot. Reading and exercising too.”
